My company and I recently closed on 11 acres, completing a 230-acre assemblage to build over 2,000 homes and 450,000 square feet of commercial space. This is a significant achievement for us, secured with a private lender who believes in our vision. But beyond financial returns, this project is about making a real impact in East Chattanooga, providing affordable housing and inspiring the community, especially the youth.
Growing up in an area with limited resources, I know firsthand the importance of mixed-income housing. We’re in a food desert, and we plan to bring in farms, farm-to-table restaurants, and a grocery store to address these issues. We involved the community through charrettes, allowing them to decide what they want to see, like amphitheaters, recreation centers, and more.
One of the main challenges I faced as a developer is undercapitalization. Finding an impact investor was a breakthrough, but we need more support to bring this vision to life faster. I’m reaching out to other potential impact investors to join us in making a difference.
We engage the youth by having them actively participate in these charrettes, turning them into developers without them even realizing it. Inclusion is key. I’m leading by example, staying active in the community, and showing the youth that they, too, can create change.
To others looking to make a similar impact: don’t get discouraged. Stick to your guns, and remember, crowdfunding and community investment can be powerful tools. Let’s create lasting change together.
